It was a very narrow win for Swiatek against Krejcikova who had two MP's but failed to use either propelling the Polish player into the quarterfinals.
For Swiatek, the clay season has been far from anything she would have hoped, especially for someone who enjoys playing on clay. Her struggles continued in Rome as well as her play so far has not been stellar. Against Krejcikova it almost cost her:
"I just had a tough day mentally. It was hard for me to be positive. I'm really happy I could win that, I could turn the score around. Usually, in this situation, I was the kind of person that was kind of giving up mentally. Today, even though I wasn't feeling completely perfect on the court, I had some issues as well, I could manage with everything and just win points."
Swiatek was able to turn the match around after she started utilizing drop shots. The Polish player underline her proudness of being able to find tactical solutions in a match that she did not play well at all:
"I had fun when I played drop shots because today I felt them really good. I asked myself a question, what would annoy me in that situation, so I tried to do that. So, yeah, sometimes it didn't look pretty, but I'm happy that I could do that. One year ago I wouldn't even come up with a solution like that. That's progress."
The Polish player will play Elina Svitolina in the quarterfinal. They never played before but Svitolina has showcase tremendous form in Rome which is also an event she won before.
