Despite falling behind in the second set, Serena Williams rediscovered her rhythm and was able to move past Danielle Collins in the third round of Roland Garros.
After winning the first set, the American fell into a 1-4 hole against her compatriot. Despite Collins playing her best tennis, she was unable to withstand the onslaught from the 23-time Grand Slam champion, who rallied back to prevail with a 6-4 6-4 victory.
"That's the joy of being Serena," Williams said after the match. "I have to always be at my A-game or else I won't be able to take it - so I always need to play good."
The three-time French Open champion looked out of it as Collins splattered the court with winners, racing to a 4-1 lead in the second set. However, the seventh seed roared back to life, winning five consecutive games to close out the win in one hour and 25 minutes.
"I just needed a win," the 39-year old said when asked about her ability to fight back in the second set. "I needed to win tough matches. I needed to win sets. I needed to win being down. I needed to find me, know who I am. Nobody else is Serena out here. It's me. It's pretty cool"
Still in the hunt for her 24th Grand Slam title, Williams will face the hard-hitting Elena Rybakina in the round of 16.
