Former World No.2
Anett Kontaveit has the distinction of being the last player defeated by WTA legend
Serena Williams, falling to the American in the second round of the 2022
US Open.
The Estonian, who recently announced her retirement, was the second seed and overwhelming favorite against the 605th ranked Williams. However, the 23-time Grand Slam champion displayed her championship grit, overcoming the odds to upset Kontaveit in three sets after two hours and 27 minutes of play.
During a new episode of the second season of Netflix's 'Break Point', Kontaveit revealed the agony and emotion she experienced during the match, calling it one of the toughest defeats of her career.
"I’ve never seen so many people on Arthur Ashe before,” she said. "It was super loud. They are all cheering for her. I am at her home, playing her in her house.
"She [Serena Williams] just suddenly changes gear and starts playing better. The crowd goes crazy. It’s difficult to handle. The whole match was emotionally one of the hardest things that I’ve gone through on court.
“It is not about losing to Serena. It was just super overwhelming. Like, I never want to do this again."
