18-time Grand Slam champion Martina Navratilova shared her opinion on Naomi Osaka's chances in her comeback at the Australian Open. The Japanese player showcased a high level of play in Brisbane, despite her second-round defeat against former world No. 1 Karolina Pliskova with a score of 6-3, 6-7, 4-6.
Undoubtedly, Osaka's return to the Rod Laver Arena is eagerly anticipated by fans and the tennis world. The talented 4-time Grand Slam champion has already clinched the Australian Open title twice and aims to reclaim the top spot in the rankings while adding more Grand Slam titles to her impressive career.

Navratilova expresses doubts over Osaka's

Osaka herself has left no doubts about aiming high in 2024: “Definitely I want to win more Grand Slams, and put in more time in the French Open and Wimbledon, and play Paris Olympics,” she said a few weeks ago.
According to the American Navratilova, Osaka's shy personality and recent motherhood are considered key factors limiting her chances in the tournament, at least for now: “She’s always been very shy, to the point where it can get in the way. Obviously, having a child changes so many of your perspectives. So many walls that we put up have to come down when you’re a mom.”
Navratilova clarified that Osaka has the capability to defeat any opponent, but it's too early to consider her a top contender in just her second tournament this year after 15 months without competing: “I think it’s too soon for having any high hopes, since it’s been so long since she played. I expect her to do well enough, but she can’t expect to win in Australia. But, certainly, she’s capable of beating anybody.”

Difficult start at the Australian Open

Naomi Osaka did not have the best draw to begin her journey in Australia, as she will face the 16th seed Caroline Garcia in the first round. Osaka was without a ranking and currently stands as the world No. 831.
So far, she has only played one match against the Frenchwoman in her career, a victory for Osaka on the same stage of the Rod Laver Arena in 2021. Osaka won 6-2, 6-3 in the second round on her way to securing her second Aussie Open and 4th Grand Slam title.
