America’s young tennis star Coco Gauff has admitted that she has a lot to work on ahead of the US Open 2024. The fourth and final Grand Slam of the year will begin from August 26 in New York where players from all over the world will participate to showcase their talent and secure the ultimate prize.
Gauff will be defending her crown at the mega-event. She lifted the title last year after beating Belarus’ Aryna Sabalenka in the final with a score of 2–6, 6–3, 6–2. The 20-year-old, who is already regarded as one of the best players currently playing in women’s tennis in the singles category, is going through a lean patch. The poor form extended further as she suffered a second-round exit from the Cincinnati Open after losing to Kazakhstan’s Yulia Putintseva with a score of 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.
Before coming to Cincinnati, the Atlanta-born star was also knocked out of the Canadian Open from the round of 16 after losing to Russia’s Diana Shnaider in straight sets with a score of 6-4, 6-1. Gauff was quoted in a report after the match, in which she admitted that she had to reset ahead of the mega-event. The current world number two also highlighted where she went wrong during the contest against a ‘tricky’ opponent.
“I feel like I have to work on consistency, overall,” she said “[I will] probably go home and try to reset. Obviously, I have a lot coming up soon with the US Open, so I think just trying to reset and be ready for that. I made a lot of errors, especially when I was up 4-2 [in the third set]. I think most of the points she won were off my errors. She’s always a tricky opponent to play. She mixes up the ball, has drop shots, slices. She’s someone that makes you earn the match.”
