Jessica Pegula was playing an excellent match against Irina Begu and then she wasn't and then again she was to advance at the Charleston Open.
It was a crazy match that saw Pegula throw away a 4-0 lead in the second set to lose it 4-6 only to fall behind 0-4 in the final set but then turn that around. We saw a reverse sweep in two consecutive sets by different players and it was a true roller coaster for the players and fans alike. Pegula herself admitted after the match that she has no idea what happened:
"I have no idea, honestly. I don’t know at one point I was about to smash all my rackets and the next thing you know I’m here so that sentence though it’s never over till it’s over."
Her mentality when falling behind was just to get on the board and win one game:
"I mean, I just tried to get one game coz there’s a lot of games that I lost in a row. So I tried to get one game, then I tried to finally hold one game and then I just kept it rolling. So I’m just glad I was able to get there."
Summarising her tough Pegula said that she will simply always be tough to play and live with what ends up happening:
"I’m just tough. Imma tough it out and I’m not going to give it to you and even though I had a swing there, you know, I kind of went off and she started playing some great tennis. I’m just tough."
