Garbine Muguruza came back to win against Ons Jabeur at the Chicago Fall Tennis Classic winning her 2nd trophy in 2021.
It was an amazing and fun match in Chicago between Ons Jabeur and Garbine Muguruza. Similar to their Wimbledon match earlier in the year, it went to three sets but this around it was Muguruza who emerged victorious. Her comeback win was special as she lost the opening set and was a break down in the 2nd set (twice). After the match she admitted she was ready for a battle:
"That was a battle, especially those first sets. We’ve played recently, this year at Wimbledon, and it was a very tough match, and I knew that she’s having one of the best seasons that a player can have. I was prepared, I went out there with all the fighting spirit in the pocket."
Muguruza lost the opening set against Jabeur finding very little answers to what the Tunisian was doing. On return she never quite found a chance despite raising her level as the set went on. On that she said:
"She was playing amazing in the first set, and my level was not at what it should be to play against her. I slowly found a space in the second set to break and to get that one, and force a decider. That gave me the extra confidence I needed, and also the energy to go and get the trophy."
The win allowed Muguruza to gather crucial points in the fight for the WTA Finals in Guadalajara. The win is even more important as Jabeur is one of the players also fighting for a spot in Mexico.
