Coco Gauff sealed a first win on grass since 2024 with a comfortable and commanding 6-2, 6-1 win over Tamara Korpatsch at
Wimbledon. After the match, she spoke about singer Bad Bunny after going to one of his shows.
Grass is not one of Gauff's favourite surfaces after losing both of her first round matches last year on the surface. She came into this event with a lack of preparation following an early exit in the Berlin Ladies Open.
However, she looked like a natural on the surface as she cruised over the finishing line, not giving Korpatsch very few chances to book her spot in round two.
It was the German who has the first chances to break. 0-40 ahead, she failed to take any of those chances as Gauff went up the gears. She won nine games in a row to seal the first set and go 5-0 ahead in the second.
Korpatsch got a hold on the board to stop the onslaught and prevent the bagel from occurring, but any opportunity of a comeback was unrealistic at best. Gauff served it out to love in a very noticeable win to kick off her seventh
Wimbledon campaign.
Gauff talks Bad Bunny after concert
After the match, all attention was turned to Bad Bunny. The Puerto Rican singer put on a show in front of 50,000 people which was attended by a variety of well-known names. Gauff was one of them, relaxing and enjoying herself before Wimbledon took priority.
Instead of choosing to watch Gauff's match, he chose to overview the proceedings on Centre Court in Novak Djokovic's tie against Yibing Wu, sitting in his box. “Oh okay! Okay. Well I was in the casita with Novak but he didn’t come to my match,” Gauff
commented after her win.
She explained how she was one of the backing dancers among a number of other fans and spectators as she explained her exchange with the singer. “I was happy. I don’t even think he knew I was there. It was funny. I was twerking with my friend and somebody tapped behind me and it was Bad Bunny. I was like oh sorry. And he was like, performing.
Coco Gauff is in the second round of Wimbledon
“I got invited to be in la casita. It was super fun. My coach was like, he’s a very smart person. Because instead of hiring more dancers he forces you guys to dance instead. Right before it was our part, someone came and was like ‘we need more energy. We need more hips. We need more dancing.’ I was like, bro, I’ve been dancing for two hours. Like I’m tired. It was hot. No but it was super fun. It was a perfect way to relax before the chaos of Wimbledon."
It seemed to do the trick with Gauff coming to SW19 with a fresh mind following the failed title defence at Roland Garros. Inconsistency has surrounded Gauff's game. Final runs in Miami and Rome were overshadowed by early exits in other big tournaments, making her a hard player to predict.
She has never made it past the fourth round, reaching the last-16 three times which included her first ever Grand Slam at the age of 15. She will take on Solana Sierra in the second round. It will be a third contest this year between the pair with Gauff having won both matches.
