Coco Gauff spoke about being a Marvel fan while describing her outfit after a victorious start at the Australian Open. The world No. 3 kicked off the tournament in style, defeating 2020 AO champion Sofia Kenin 6-3, 6-3.
The 20-year-old player debuted a new outfit from her sponsor, New Balance, inspired by female superheroes from the Marvel universe. “This outfit—well, I’m a huge Marvel fan, and a lot of the female superheroes had cool cut-outs on their outfits, so that’s what I wanted to do,” Gauff said, smiling as the 2023 US Open champion.
“It’s actually kind of a pain to get into because it’s a bodysuit, guys. I have to put the bottom part first and then pull it over my head—it’s kind of a struggle. If you can’t hold your bladder, it’s also not a good idea,” she added, laughing. “You have to sacrifice for fashion.”
“And then the skirt—I like to wear cargo pants. Obviously, I’m not going to play tennis in pants, so I thought, why not a cargo skirt? You can put the ball here in this pocket, but I move too much for that.”
Gauff advanced to the second round and will face British player Jodie Burrage, who defeated Leolia Jeanjean in her opening match.
