Tunisia’s
Ons Jabeur has stated that she is going for ‘revenge’
in her quarterfinal clash against last year’s final opponent
Elena Rybakina.
The 28-year-old secured her place in the last eight of the third
Grand Slam of the year after thrashing Czech Republic’s Petra Kvitova in straight
sets with a score of 6-0, 6-3 on Monday.
That victory sets up a repeat of the last year's
Wimbledon final
where Jabeur suffered a heartbreaking defeat against Rybakina with a score of 3–6,
6–2, 6–2.
Talking after her triumph in the round of 16 clash, the
current world number six stated that she is expecting a tough fixture against
the 24-year-old, who according to her is an ‘amazing player’.
“It’s a difficult match, you know,” she said. “I’m probably
going for my revenge. It was a difficult final last year. It’s going to bring a
lot of memories. I’m hoping to play like today and, you know, just get the win
because she’s an amazing player. You can see she’s like boom boom all the time.
She had no mercy on her. So let’s see what’s going to happen.”
Jabeur and Rybakina have faced off four times in
professional tennis where there is nothing much to choose from as both secured
two victories each.
Interestingly, the Ksar Hellal-born’s both victories against
the current world number three came on the hard court. On the other hand, Rybakina
registered a victory on grass and clay courts.
Despite the record of never beating Rybakina on the grass
court, Jabeur will be pretty optimistic going into the match as she has only
lost one set in the tournament so far, which she did against Canada’s Bianca
Andreescu in the third round.
Other than that, Jabeur has defeated all her other opponents
— Poland’s Magdalena Frech, China’s Zhuoxuan Bai and Kvitova — in straight
sets.
