Caroline Wozniacki has said that she still has a lot to learn on her comeback journey following her defeat in the second round of the National Bank
Canadian Open (Omnium Banque Nationale) in Montreal.
Former world No. 1 Wozniacki had a strong start at the WTA 1000 event, winning against Australia's Kimberly Birrell in straight sets 6-2, 6-2, in what was the Dane's first match in over three years.
However, Wozniacki met her match in the second round where she faced 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova. The ninth seed emerged victorious 6-2, 7-5. Nevertheless, Wozniacki says she is happy with her performance at the tournament.
Wozniacki says she's proud of herself
"I think as a competitor you always want to win obviously, but at the end of the day if I look at this tournament, I’m proud of myself. I’m happy that I got to play two matches. I’m happy that I kind of know where I stand, what I can do moving forward," said Wozniacki.
"I think it’s a great learning curve, and I’m happy that I know where I am, and I don’t feel like I’m that far away from where I want to be. It’s great to be here and learn a lot along the way."
The 33-year-old also added that she's not putting too much pressure on herself.
"Obviously it didn’t go the way I’d hoped, but at the end of the day I think there was a lot of positives I can bring with me. I think in periods I played very well, and then in others I made a few too many unforced errors.
"All in all, I’m going in the right direction, and I think it’s to be expected after having not having played a lot of matches in a long time," she said.
