Coco Gauff
expressed her delight at playing the
WTA Finals in Cancun and her happiness
about the beach and the good weather.
World No. 3
will be participating in the WTA Finals for the second time at just 19 years of
age, but this time she arrives with better feelings than last year. In the
latter part of the year, Coco Gauff was the most consistent player, winning her
first WTA 500, first WTA 1000, and her first Grand Slam at the US Open in less
than six weeks.
With her
confidence soaring, she aims to improve her performance from 2022 when she
suffered three consecutive losses. At the gala preceding the draw ceremony,
Gauff appeared on the red carpet and answered some questions from the press,
saying she hopes to demonstrate what she has accomplished in her training.
"Just
a lot of fun. I'm hoping to play some good tennis. I've been practicing well,
hopefully I can transfer that onto the match court," she said.
The
American also expressed her gratitude to the Mexican fans, recalling the great
support she received at the 2022 Guadalajara Open. She also mentioned how she's
enjoying Cancun because the weather is similar to her home in the USA:
"Oh,
they're really great. I didn't play Guadalajara this year but I played last
year and the fans were really receiving and supportive of me so hopefully I can
get the same support here in Cancun," Gauff said.
"It
reminds me of home. I live close to Miami so I'm really familiar, everything
seems familiar here. The weather's pretty much similar and obviously the beach.
I love the beach. I'm like a mermaid so to wake up everyday and see the beach
is a dream," she added.
Coco Gauff
jokingly referred to her performance last year and took her participation this
year in stride, mentioning that she hopes for a better outcome than the
previous year.
"Oh
no, I'm just going to go out there and have fun. Last Finals I did not do well
so it's only upwards from here," she said.
Coco
Gauff's first challenge will be on Monday, October 30th, as she faces the 6th
seed Ons Jabeur. So far, Gauff leads the head-to-head (h2h) 3-2, and they have
only met once on a hardcourt, with Gauff winning in the 2020 Lexington Open.
