Heather Watson overcame teenager Leylah Fernandez in a tightly contested match to win her fourth title in Acapulco.
Watson defeated
Fernandez 6-4, 6-7(8), 6-1 to win the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC singles championship. Fernandez put up a very strong challenge and it took Watson two hours and 46 minutes to overcome her.
The last time Watson won a WTA singles title was in 2016. And the Brit is delighted that her title drought is finally over.
"I'm so happy to get my fourth title," Watson said to the press, after her win. "It’s been a few years, so I’m just really, really happy I came through that match."
Watson extended her head to head record over Fernandez to 3-0 with her triumph. She said she knew what to expect from the Canadian teenager having played her twice before.
Watson also praised Fernandez for her mental toughness and said she will quickly rise up the WTA rankings if she maintains her current level of tennis.
"I’ve played Leylah two times before this, and I knew what to expect. She’s a great player, and it would be really tough because the two matches before that had been really tough. The thing I notice about her the most is the head on her shoulders. She’s very, very mature for her age."
"I think it’s her mental toughness that really stands out. I think she’s going to have a great career ahead of her and rise up the rankings very quickly if she keeps playing like this."
