Going into their
Billie Jean King Cup tie and having two top 20 players in
Jessica Pegula and
Emma Navarro against a group of unknowns, USA were expected to romp through their opening two ties to put themselves in position for the Finals. But while they did go 2-0 up, it was far from easy.
In the opening match of the tie, Jessica Pegula struggled with windy conditions as well as an error-strewn display as she had to battle back from a set down to defeat World No.279, Sofia Costoulas 4-6, 6-2, 6-3. Having to dig deep, she said that she apologised to her new captain, Lindsay Davenport after dropping the first set against a player she was expected to easily beat. She will face Hanne Vandewinkel who majorly troubled Emma Navarro.
"She was playing really, really well," admitted Pegula after the match. "I came out a little flat and playing in really windy conditions doesn't really help, but I was able to figure it out in tough conditions and I'm just glad I got the win for the team."
Navarro joked on court that it took her a while to get over hearing her rap debut being played on the big screen. But she was in a see of trouble at times against Vandewinkel as she came back to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Patience was certainly a virtue as on her Billie Jean King Cup debut, she sealed a vital break in the latter half of the match to claim the win. Not exactly the walk in the park that it could've been on paper based off the rankings. But it is an opening win still for the USA who will aim to book their spot on Saturday evening when Pegula opens up again.
