Rome WTA 1000 Updates: OUT: Pegula🇺🇸, Pliskova🇨🇿 IN: Minnen🇧🇪, Yafan Wang🇨🇳, Sherif🇪🇬 Next: Bucsa🇪🇸
Jessica Pegula's stint away from tennis will continue until at the very earliest, the Internationaux de Strasbourg the week before Roland Garros at the end of May after her undisclosed injury continues to keep her from returning.
Pegula played last at the Billie Jean King Cup during their 4-0 win over Belgium and despite some struggles in getting through, she didn't look injured as Emma Navarro had similar problems in defeating the unknown stars. But she then said that she wasn't going to play the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart. This though was due to a 'too tough' turnaround after being back home for national duty.
But she then took to Instagram to confirm that she suffered an injury setback so wouldn't be playing Madrid. She has previously had a neck injury earlier this year which kept her away for the start of 2024. Also she split with coach David Witt with her best result coming as of late in reaching the semi-finals at the Charleston Open.
“Hi guys not a great update but I got hurt this past week before Madrid and Unfortunately not ready to play. Thankful for some extra time at home and hope to be back ASAP,” the American wrote on an Instagram Story.
In a confirmed Entry List before the draw for the Rome Open though, it was set that she wasn't playing next week. This means that she will only seemingly play Strasbourg, the week prior to Roland Garros. Karolina Pliskova is also out of the Entry List.
It could yet be that Pegula skips the clay court season entirely though with the American signed up for Libema Open s'Hertogenbosch to begin the grass court season after Roland Garros. So she is planning on playing in the next few weeks, just potentially not in Rome, Strasbourg or Paris.
