3-time Madrid Open champion Petra Kvitova advanced to the second round after her opponent retired in the second set, now she will be facing Angelique Kerber.
The experienced Czech player didn't have a usual start to the tournament as she didn't even play the full two sets. However, she still advanced to the second round and that's the most important for her.
In the second round, she will be facing former world number 1, Angelique Kerber. The two met a lot of times between 2012 and 2019 but it's more than 2 years since their meeting now. During an interview, Kvitova spoke about her first-round opponent Marie Bouzkova as well as her next opponent Angelique Kerber.
"I hope that she will be okay," Kvitova said, in her post-match press conference. "I think she really still played quite okay. But, yeah, the end of the match is really tough to describe."
"It's quite a long time when we played each other [last]," said Kvitova, looking forward to her match against Kerber. "She's a lefty so that will be a big challenge. I think she is still working very hard. That's what I know, still fighting and everything."
