The Mutua Madrid Open at Caja Magica changed the surface from indoor hard to clay back in 2009, joining Monte Carlo and Rome as one of three clay-court Masters 1000 events.
Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic have won nine out of 11 titles in Madrid since 2009, and they were all on the entry list but later, the Swiss withdrew from the event that takes place between May 2-9. Andy Murray and Alexander Zverev are the only Caja Magica champions outside the 'Big 3 .' It should be interesting to see who will claim the Madrid title in a month, with all the players from the top on the entry list so far.
In the title match, Novak took down Stefanos Tsitsipas (he defeated Rafael Nadal in the semis) 6-3, 6-4 in an hour and 32 minutes to claim the Masters 1000 crown number 33 and join Rafael Nadal at the top of the list. It was the second final Masters 1000 final for the Greek, and he didn't have much left in the tank after that thrilling victory over Rafa on the previous night.
Tsitsipas reached only one deuce on the return and never earned a break chance, having to match that level in his games to remain in contention. Instead of that, Novak grabbed one break in each set to sail towards the victory and claim the first Madrid Open crown since 2016.
