Veronika Kudermetova sparked controversy at the Madrid Open for wearing the logo of a company that is under EU sanctions for supplying the Russian army.
Russian players are permitted to compete on the tennis circuit but have to remove any association with Russia. That could be their social media handles, or anything relating to the country however Kudermetova was spotted wearing a kit that featured the logo of Russian company Tatneft. The company is currently under EU sanctions for supplying the Russian army.
Fans noticed that and have called it out on social media but there is nothing in the WTA rulebook that prevents her from wearing kits with the logo. The Madrid Open seemingly has no problems with it either but we'll see if anything changes once this becomes inevitably viral on social media.
She won't be able to wear the logo at Wimbledon as the event will have strict rules when it comes to sponsors and her sponsor would not be acceptable.
