Iga Swiatek is the only top 10 seed remaining in the
Roland Garros women's singles draw after
Paula Badosa and Aryna Sabalenka fell in quick succession at the
French Open.
Badosa retired after going 6-3, 2-1 down against
Veronika Kudermetova who will now move through to face Madison Keys or Elena Rybakina in the fourth round in Paris.
She had to battle throughout the tie for her survival losing her second service game in a row to begin the first set and after a back and forth effort in game five, Badosa handed the Russian the break hitting a tame backhand into the net to lose her fourth game in a row after going 2-0 up initially.
Holding to go 5-2 up, the beginning of the end was signalled as Badosa called for the trainer and despite showing some signs that she was going to kick into life in the second set, she called for the trainer after being broken again.
Sabalenka lost to
Camila Giorgi who was in superb form after losing the opening set to the Belarusian 6-4. She lost only one more game as she swept the seventh seed 6-1, 6-0 from there to move through in what will be a popular result.
Also through are
Jessica Pegula who continues her superb form by sweeping past Tamara Zidansek in a 6-1, 7-6 win. As well as Daria Kasatkina who swept Shelby Rogers 6-3, 6-2 and Qinwen Zheng with the Chinese prodigy set to face Iga Swiatek after Alize Cornet retired 6-0, 3-0 down.
