Leylah Fernandez was defeated in the semifinals of the W100 Madrid against the local player Sara Sorribes Tormo, with a score of 6-2, 7-5.
The Canadian was looking to find better sensations in the midst of her preparation for the French Open. In both the Madrid Open and the Rome Open, Fernandez was unexpectedly eliminated in the first round. This week, she received a wild card for the ITF Spain in an effort to gain rhythm and recover some points to avoid falling too far in the rankings, where she currently stands at the world No. 50.
The Spanish player Sara Sorribes Tormo was sidelined for several months due to an injury at the end of last year, which forced her to miss the first part of the season and only make her debut in early April. This affected her ranking, and although she is currently outside the top 150, she has gradually been regaining positions. By reaching the final, she is guaranteed to climb at least to world No. 132.
The match saw an inconsistent Leylah, who was broken six times and only won 50% of her first serves, facing an opponent who is a clay court specialist and will compete for the title against Olga Danilovic.
Nevertheless, the former US Open finalist won several matches against Conny Perrin, Emiliana Arango, and Arantxa Rus, which will give her confidence heading into Roland Garros, where she reached the quarterfinals last year.
On Monday, both Sorribes and Fernandez are registered to play in the WTA 250 event in Marrakech and have been drawn to face each other in the opening round, which could lead to a quick rematch.
