Leylah Fernandez is in the 4ht round of Roland Garros by beating Belinda Bencic in a very close affair 7-5 3-6 6-4.
The Canadian player created a lot of problems for Bencic with her forehand as the Swiss player was unable to tame it for a prolonged period of time. Being a lefty certainly did not aid Bencic who had to work really hard for every single point. Fernandez jumped out to an early 3-0 lead from the start with her forehand doing most of the work.
When Bencic finally found some solutions and battled back, Leylah got a bit nervous and started missing a lot more. She lost her serve at 4-4 to give Bencic the chance to win the opening set but broke back immediately as well. Fernandez was still able to win the opening set 7-5 behind 11 winners. The 2nd set was a bad one from Fernandez.
She struggled with her serve and it gave Bencic a lot of chances to attack her early in the rallies. The Swiss player did hitting 18 winners in the process. The final set opened with Bencic jumping out to a 2-0 lead after some bad misses by Leylah who rushed a lot. Bencic got a bit tight after that leaving Leylah a chance and she took it.
Nothing happened after that with both players holding their serves. A very poor one from Bencic gave Leylah the 5-3 lead. Belinda held for 5-4 and broke her opponent to make it 5-5 after some poor serving from Leylah. She broke Bencic once more at 5-5 to take a 6-5 lead and Fernandez was then finally able to finish it off with 7-5.
