Mirra
Andreeva secured her third consecutive victory of the season by defeating Arina
Rodionova 6-1, 6-1 in the round of 16 at the WTA 500 Brisbane International. In
her quest for a spot in the semifinals, the 16-year-old will face 19-year-old
Linda Noskova, who has also had a brilliant start to the season with three
consecutive wins.
This
upcoming clash marks the first meeting between teenagers in a tournament of 500
or higher since Caroline Wozniacki (19 years old) in 2009 defeated the American
Melanie Oudin (17 years old) 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals of the US Open.
Wozniacki advanced to the final but fell to Kim Clijsters.
Both
Noskova and Andreeva have previously entered the top 50, with the Russian being
the youngest within the top 100, while Noskova is the third youngest (only
Linda Fruhvirtova is younger by 6 months, currently ranked world No. 85).
Teenagers
clash in Brisbane quarterfinals
Noskova
began her tournament journey in the first round with a hard-fought victory over
Timea Babos (No. 192) with a score of 5-7, 7-6(8), 7-6(2). In the second round,
she faced the 10th seed
Sorana Cirstea (No. 26) and secured a win by 6-4, 4-6,
6-4. Moving into the third round, she encountered another young surprise, the
21-year-old Argentine
Julia Riera (No. 137), and once again battled to secure
the victory with a scoreline of 6-1, 6-7(4), 6-3.
On the
other hand, Andreeva has dominated her opponents, conceding only ten games in
three matches so far. Her first victim was compatriot
Diana Shnaider (6-2,
6-3), followed by a remarkable triumph over fellow Russian and 4th seed Ludmila
Samsonova (No. 14) with a convincing score of 6-1, 6-2, marking her first win
against a top-15 player. In the third round, she continued her stellar
performance by defeating
Arina Rodionova.
