Greece’s tennis star
Maria Sakkari has stated that she would
prefer winning a gold medal at Olympics over winning a Grand Slam.
The 28-year-old is amongst the top 10 players in the women’s
singles category and is currently taking part in the Guadalajara Open.
Sakkari was quoted in a recent report where she stated that
winning gold at the Olympics would mean a lot to her and it doesn’t matter if it
comes in the singles category or in the mixed doubles while playing alongside Stefanos
Tsitsipas.
“I come from Greece, the Olympics started in Greece, so a
gold medal would mean a lot to me,” she said. “It would be something
extraordinary, like I was bringing something home. It would be wonderful to do
it in singles, but also in mixed doubles with Stefanos Tsitsipas. Either way, it would be amazing.”
Sakkari does not have a great year while playing at the
highest level where she did not manage to qualify for the fourth round or
beyond in any of the Grand Slams.
Her best outing in 2023 while playing in a major tournament
came in the Australian Open where she was knocked out of the tournament after losing
to China’s Zhu Lin in the third round with a score of 7-6, 1-6, 6-4.
