Stefanos
Tsitsipas has withdrawn from the
Laver Cup due to injury after Davis Cup,
marking another absence in the tournament.
This Laver
Cup edition may seem less enticing to fans compared to previous years. Unlike
all the previous editions, there won't be any Grand Slam champions or former
world No. 1 players, who have previously graced the event with their star
power, including tennis legends like Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak
Djokovic.
Notable
names like Daniil Medvedev, Dominic Thiem, Marin Cilic, and Nick Kyrgios have
also captivated the audience's interest in previous editions. However, this
year's Laver Cup will feature a diminished lineup of players, and it now
includes the withdrawal of world No. 5
Stefanos Tsitsipas.
The Greek
tennis star had participated in the Davis Cup with his country this week,
winning one singles match but losing another singles match and a doubles match.
Tsitsipas' withdrawal is a significant blow to Team Europe and the tournament,
as it adds to the recent absence of world No. 4 Holger Rune.
As a
result, Team Europe is now left with Andrey Rublev (6th) and Casper Ruud (9th) as the only players ranked within the top 10 in the
tournament. Also, on the Team Europe side, there will be Hubert Hurkacz (16th), Gael Monfils (140th), Arthur Fils (42nd), and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (25th).
Team World, on the other hand, boasts a decent lineup, featuring
players such as Taylor Fritz (8th), Frances Tiafoe (11th), emerging talent Ben Shelton (19th),
Canadians Milos Raonic (323th) and Felix Auger-Aliassime (14th), as well as Argentine
Francisco Cerundolo (19th).
While the
star power may be somewhat reduced in this year's Laver Cup, the event still
promises exciting and competitive tennis action. The tournament is scheduled to
take place from September 22nd to the 24th, and fans can look forward to
witnessing the tennis talent step onto the court in
Vancouver, Canada.
