Onto the next round! Jessica Pegula has played non-stop tennis for the past month but continues to win. She’s won 11 of her last 12 matches 👏
Jessica Pegula defeats Sofia Kenin in American duel 7-6(4), 6-3 and advances to the third round of the US Open. The World No. 6 overcame a tough first set and dominated the second to move forward in the year's final Grand Slam.
The first set started in favor of Kenin, who got an early break to lead 2-0. The former Australian Open champion began to struggle with her serve, and Pegula took advantage, recovering the break and leveling the score at 3-3 after two breaks for each player.
However, both players improved their serving, with Pegula saving a single extra break point in the set. The set went to a tie-break, where Pegula won five consecutive points to take the set 7-6(4). Although Kenin was more aggressive with 14 winners compared to Pegula's 11 and frequently approached the net, Pegula's consistency from the baseline proved decisive in closing out the tight set.
From then on, Kenin's first serve faltered, reaching only 58% throughout the set, which Pegula capitalized on effectively from the return. While Kenin took the first break and led 2-0 again, she became particularly inconsistent, allowing Pegula to take control more effectively than in the first set.
Kenin's level dropped significantly in the latter part of the match. Despite starting with an advantage, she could not maintain her form, and Pegula pressed the accelerator to secure two consecutive breaks and guarantee the win 7-6(4), 6-3 after one hour and 27 minutes. In the third round, Pegula will face the surprising Spanish player Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, who defeated the 31st seed Katie Boulter in straight sets.
