It was a miracle from
Mirra Andreeva as the 16-year-old prodigy came from 1-5 down in the third set of her clash against Diane Parry to reach the Last 16 of the 2024
Australian Open.
Andreeva reaches the second week of a Grand Slam for the second time after doing so at Wimbledon last year seeing off Parry 1-6, 6-1, 7-6(5) in a match that she was expected to win with ease compared to her clash against Ons Jabeur, but it didn't pan out that way.
Parry was much better early on and used both of her break points successfully to lead surprisingly 5-0 in the opening set. Andreeva had four chances to break back still but couldn't use them and Parry took the set 6-1. But one of the most frequent scorelines in WTA Tennis reared its head again as Andreeva repeated the feat taking the second set 6-1 without facing any break points herself to force a decider where she was the favourite as a result.
Or as she thought as Parry led the deciding set 5-1 and Andreeva looked to be heading out of the tournament after being broken twice. However when Parry was serving for the match, Andreeva broke and grabbed a lifeline and saved a match point on her serve as she started to believe. Broken one more time, Andreeva was herself was set to serve for the match but couldn't convert as it went to a tie-break. Andreeva though dominated this time to avert the scare and will now face Barbora Krejcikova or Storm Hunter.
