Katie
Volynets defeated
Mirra Andreeva and advanced to the second round of Indian
Wells with a score of 7-5, 7-5. The local tennis player showed resilience,
especially in a second set that the Russian controlled from the beginning but
couldn't close out despite having four set points in her favor.
The
16-year-old teenager took the initiative for a significant part of the match,
but it wasn't enough against Volynets' resistance, securing her second victory
in a WTA 1000 main draw, with the previous one coming in the 2022
Indian Wells.
In the second round, she will face the 6th seed, Ons Jabeur.
Probably
the biggest surprise of the day on the WTA side. In the first set, Andreeva
appeared slightly more aggressive than her opponent, securing the first break
in the third game, although Volynets quickly responded to maintain parity. With
the score at 4-4, Andreeva gained a valuable break that allowed her to serve
for the first set. However, a couple of unforced errors gave the break to
Volynets, who won three consecutive games to take the set 7-5, coming from
behind.
Volynets'
consistency from the baseline frustrated Andreeva at times, who nonetheless
maintained the initiative in the set. The young Russian was consistent with her
service, and with two breaks, she led 5-3 and 40-0 with the opportunity to
level the match from her service. However, after squandering four set points,
Volynets leveled the score.
In the
final games, Andreeva appeared nervous, lacking initiative, and playing high
shots through the center of the court, hoping for Volynets' errors. The
American did not hesitate when presented with opportunities, securing four
consecutive games and winning the first match point to conclude the match 7-5,
7-5. Andreeva quickly exited the court, visibly upset after wasting good
opportunities during the match.
