Garbine Muguruza has officially withdrawn from the 2021
Madrid Open due to a left thigh injury.
The news was broken on social media with the official social media pages of the Madrid Open and WTA. The news comes as a big disappointment for the best performing WTA player in 2021 ahead of her preferred clay swing. Muguruza issued a statement posted by the WTA Insider Twitter account that reads:
"This is the worst news and the most painful decision any player has to make. We have been working hard to recover and be able to get to the tournament in good shape. I came a week before to adapt because I really wanted to do well this year in Madrid, at home, in front of my home crowd. But the discomfort had returned and the last MRI it has been confirmed that I have not recovered 100% to compete and the doctors' recommendation is to stop.
It's not an easy decision and it is a great disappointment. I want to thank the tournament for all the effort they have made to make it possible for us to have this year under these circumstances. I hope it will be a great tournament and that the fans in Madrid and at home on TV can enjoy it. Next year, I will try again with even more enthusiasm."
As noted by Muguruza herself, the news comes as a huge disappointment and it is most likely tied to the injury she suffered in Charleston. It is unclear what this means for Rome or the French Open but with the high level of precaution in dealing with this injury, it seems Muguruza is focused on recovery in time for the French Open.
