As on every Monday, the WTA published its new rankings and it showed Osaka as the 2nd best player in the world officially confirming her for the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Naomi Osaka last played tennis competitively in the first week of Roland Garros. After winning one match she decided to pull out of the event due to the whole fiasco she created by refusing to attend post-match press conferences. After announcing withdrawal she said she was going to take some time off to put things into perspective.
Since then she has officially withdrawn from the grass-court event in Berlin casting doubt over her Wimbledon participation. Osaka has not publicly commented on Wimbledon but she was looking forward to competing at the Olympic Games in her native Japan.
With the new WTA Rankings out today, Osaka officially qualified as the best ranked Japanese player. Participation is limited to only the 4 highest ranked players from each country. Speaking about the Olympic Games, Osaka said in 2019:
"It would be the biggest thing I would have achieved in my career, although in some ways that is simply because of timing. I contest grand slams every year, but an Olympic Games is only once every four years so there are not many opportunities to become an Olympic champion."
