Naomi Osaka began her 2026
Australian Open campaign with an absolute stunning match against
Antonia Ruzic. It was a rollercoaster ride for the pair of them, but it was Osaka who prevailed 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
The two-time champion has had plenty of success Down Under in the past. After a positive end to 2025 which saw her reach a WTA 1000 final and US Open semi-final, the former world number one was looking to continue this form as she looks to rise back to where she once ruled.
She was up against Ruzic, who was not only competing at the
Australian Open for the very first time, but was celebrating her 23rd birthday. The perfect present would be an emphatic triumph against one of the world's best.
Osaka puts on a show in Melbourne
Before the match even started, Osaka was in the spotlight with a
flamboyant outfit, walking on with a white umbrella and wearing a white veil over a wide white brimmed hat. Underneath this was a colourful Nike outfit, matching her clothing that she boasted while in action. It has gone very viral on court, with Osaka straight faced while entering the stage with the eyes on the prize.
It was straight down to business for the Japanese tennis player, who went out into a 3-0 lead with a single break. The next game would take almost 15 minutes to complete, with both players struggling to get over the line. An incredible nine deuces were played out, with four squandered break points from Osaka narrowly keeping Ruzic in the set.
She continued this momentum from what seemed like an exhausting game. She broke to get the match back on serve before levelling the tie at 3-3. The momentum switched sides once again with Osaka much more clinical when offered a chance compared to prior times in the match. For the third time in the set, three games on the spin were won which inevitably resulted in Osaka clinching the first set.
She was going in for the kill but soon found herself on the backfoot. Ruzic upped her levels enroute to a 3-0 lead, giving the four-time Grand Slam champion more to ponder. Ahead of an important deuce at 5-2, the lights on the net signalling whether the ball had gone out were permanently stuck on. Play was halted for a brief period of time while the electricians did the technical work, with the issue eventually getting resolved.
Naomi Osaka is into the second round of the 2026 Australian Open
Ruzic was proving a tough cookie to crack. After Osaka forced her to serve it out for the set, the Croat saved two break points while clinching her second point for a level match.
It looked like it was falling apart for Ruzic, who was being hit by a barrage from Osaka. Her defence was shattered, and she was broken. A passionate Osaka was becoming more vocal as the match went on, letting out her raw emotions as she saved a break point before some big hitting. However, a stubborn Ruzic broke back, as the frustration rose on the Osaka side of the court.
This misery would be compounded after Ruzic broke once more to go 4-3 ahead. Osaka wrestled back the advantage before holding in a game lasting less than a minute to move within one of the match. She wasted no time in getting the job done in a hard-fought win.
