Naomi
Osaka,
Venus Williams, and
Serena Williams were honored on International
Women's Day by the World Surf League.
At the MEO Rip Curl Pro Portugal, an event was
held where athletes wore jerseys with the name of a woman in sports who
inspires them. Among the surfers, some wore the names of tennis players on
their backs. American surfer Lakey Peterson wore a jersey with the name of
Venus Williams, while French surfer Maxime Huscenot wore the name of Serena
Williams.
Australian
surfer Molly Picklum paid tribute to her compatriot and former world No. 1
Ashleigh Barty, while Japanese surfer Kanoa Igarashi also chose a compatriot,
wearing a
Naomi Osaka t-shirt. Brazilian-American surfer Tatiana Weston-Webb
wore the name of
Beatriz Haddad Maia, and fellow Brazilian Miguel Pupo wore a
jersey of doubles player Luisa Stefani. The WTA shared some photos of the
occasion on their social media channels.
