Reigning US Open champion Naomi Osaka was forced to play some of her best tennis on Wednesday, and managed to pull out the victory to advance at the Gippsland Trophy.
The second seed faced Britain's Katie Boulter, who had just seen off American Coco Gauff in the previous round. With her momentum and confidence at an all-time high, the World No.371 came out with her foot on the gas. She broke the Osaka twice to take the first set 6-3, and things were looking glum for the Japanese superstar.
Nonetheless, Osaka's prowess were on full display in the second set, as the World No.3 quickly raced to a 4-0 lead. After a slight hiccup that saw Boulter win three straight games, Osaka obtained a third break to clinch the second set.
There was never any doubt as to who was in control during the final set, as Osaka dominated her opponent with powerful strokes from the baseline. The second seed reeled off three consecutive games, before eventually closing out the match with a 3-6 6-3 6-1 victory. She next faces the winner between Irina Begu and fifth seed Johanna Konta in the quarterfinals.
Elina Svitolina endured a similar fate on Wednesday, as she was forced to rally from a set down to defeat 2017 Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko. After an opening set that saw both ladies exchange breaks, Ostapenko prevailed 7-6(4) in a tiebreak.
The third-seeded Svitolina took control in the second set, obtaining the early break to eventually claim the set without dropping serve. After securing two more breaks in the third, she outplayed the frustrated Ostapenko to escape with a 6-7(4) 6-3 6-2 victory. The Ukrainian will face seventh-seeded Elise Mertens in the quarterfinal, as the Belgian defeated Caroline Garcia in straight sets earlier in the day.
