Marta Kostyuk has once again talked about the impact of the war in her country on tennis stating that only a handful of players have denounced the war.
As Wimbledon approaches, Russian and Belarusian players will be asked to denounce the war with a written statement in order to participate in the event. Most will likely oblige but Kostyuk pointed out that only a handful of them have done so far which she thinks shows what they really think of it.
She explained:
"Out of about 50, one, two, three, four, five - no more. They admitted that their country is doing something truly despicable and they want the war to end with Ukraine's victory. The rest may want peace, but only if Russia wins. Its citizens will gladly sacrifice millions of lives to avoid defeat. They categorically reject her, but I am sure that they will lose."
She further talked about the chilly relations between the players:
"Some wonder why we don't smile at them: 'after all, we didn't do anything wrong, we don't want war'. As if we want [it]. They don't say anything bad, but they don't say anything good either."
