For one ball girl, it was wrong place wrong time as she was wiped out by Demi Schuurs in her quarter-final clash of the women's doubles at Wimbledon.
The Dutchwoman, teamed up with Ellen Perez, were the ninth seeds heading into the competition and were eyeing up the chance of going deeper in the tournament with possible Grand Slam success on the horizon as the second week plods on.
The duo just came off the back of reaching the Bad Homburg final, losing a third set tiebreak 10-5 against Aldila Sutjiadi and former world number two Vera Zvonareva.
Schuurs and Perez would make the trip to Wimbledon as the ninth seeds. Grand Slam glory has so far eluded Schuurs. She has reached the semi-final once at the 2021 Australian Open along with a plethora of Grand Slam quarter-finals.
Her best result at Wimbledon would come in 2019 where she would bow out at the last-eight stage. The 32-year-old has since won just three matches in her last five participations in the women's doubles at SW19 and never made it past the second round.
This trend was buckled following a fine week on court with a touch of fortune. They started off by taking down Miyu Kato and Kamilla Rakhimova 7-5, 7-5 before facing off against Solana Sierra and Camila Osorio. Significantly, this could have been the Williams sisters if they had not pulled out of their opening round test against the South American duo. Nevertheless, the second round would go the way of Schuurs and Perez in a 6-3, 6-1 trouncing.
Marta Kostyuk and Elena-Gabriela Ruse would be next in line, and they would not even need to step onto court for that tie. With Kostyuk going deep in the singles, the Ukrainian was not wanting to exert anymore energy away from that, allowing Schuurs and Perez to safely go into the quarter-final. The 13th seeds Shuko Aoyama and En-Shuo Liang were their next test, and it would end in defeat.

Schuurs takes out ball girl

After breaking back enroute to levelling the match at 3-3, the biggest talking point of the contest occurred. Schuurs was set towards the back of the court, far beyond the baseline, as she tried to return a looping shot that went very long.
She completely missed the ball but managed to bundle into the innocent ball girl as both went tumbling to the ground. As the 32-year-old missed the shot, she went straight into the back of the ball girl, accidently giving her a firm shove onto the floor as she soon followed in similar fashion.
The concrete wall behind also did not do any favours. The ball girl seemed a bit stunned but ok, while Schuurs was forced to go back to her chair and receive some treatment. She would serve it out, but the duo lost the first set after being broken late.
After taking a 3-1 lead in the second set thanks to a break to love, they would lost the next eight points and five of the next six games, dropping 12 of the final 13 points in the tie as they saw their 2026 Wimbledon campaign come to an end, losing 6-4, 6-4.
