Jessica Pegula had to fight to eliminate
Camila Giorgi in the second round of
Indian Wells.
The H2H
between Pegula and Giorgi was 4-1 in favor of the American. Their first match
was in August 2019 at the final of the WTA 500 Washington with a victory for the
American. In their second match, they played the semifinal of the Montreal WTA
1000, where Giorgi took revenge for the lost final and went on to win her first
WTA 1000 against Karolina Pliskova.
In the
first set, Giorgi showed her best form and quickly took the lead 4-0, and
although Pegula could react and start to get into the game, the advantage was
too much to overcome, with the 31-year-old player taking the lead 6-3.
The world
No. 3 remained calm and for the second set took control of the game and easily
extended the match with a 6-1 advantage. In the third set, Pegula continued to
lead the match with a series of unforced errors from the Italian, who could not
show confidence in her service. The dominance was absolute for the American who
took her second match point to win 3-6, 6-1, 6-2.
Despite a
complex start to the game, Jessica Pegula pulled off a difficult match against
a rival who won the Merida Open two weeks ago and can complicate anyone's game
on a good day. The American will play the third round against 21-year-old
Russian Anastasia Potapova.
