Jessica Pegula, top seed at the CreditOne Charleston Open saw off Paula Badosa to reach the semi-finals with the Spaniard unable to continue her good run this week.
After crushing Mayar Sherif, beating Grand Slam finalist Leylah Fernandez in two sets, and dominating the young Russian promise Diana Shnaider, she could not overcome the hurdle of the third player in the world.
The first set started evenly, with both players holding their serves. But Pegula broke at the best moment, when she was 4-3 up, to get 5-3 and end up taking the first set on serve by 6-3.
The second set started with a new break for the American. She managed to keep it almost until the end, but when she served to win the match at 5-4, Badosa recovered the game of disadvantage and they went to the tie-break.
Pegula will now face Belinda Bencic, one of the best players so far this year, in the semifinals for a place in the final.
