Top-ranked American
Jessica Pegula cruised past compatriot
Coco Vandeweghe on Wednesday night at the
San Diego Open, to secure her spot in ye another WTA quarterfinal.
Pegula resumed her stellar form with a 6-3 6-1 demolition of Vandeweghe, who started strong but was unable to keep up with her younger opponent. Vandeweghe obtained an early break on Pegula's serve, but was unable to create any space between herself and the fourth seed. Pegula would break back and keep the momentum going, as she quickly ran away with the opening set.
Vandeweghe, once ranked No.9 in the world, looked out of sorts in the second set. The 2017 US Open semifinalist lacked power and consistency in her groundstrokes, which led to easy points for Pegula. After obtaining a double break and winning 9 out of 10 points behind her first serve, Pegula closed out the match as Vandeweghe failed to prolong the inevitable when serving to stay alive at 1-5. The World No.6 sealed her victory after just 69 minutes, moving forward after a slightly underwhelming all-American affair.
Pegula will face either compatriot Madison Keys or eighth seed Daria Kasatkina, as both ladies battle it out in their round of 16 encounter on Thursday.
