Jessica Pegula has reacted to herself and doubles partner
Coco Gauff becoming the first American women to triumph in singles at the
Canadian Open and
Cincinnati Open respectively.
Pegula and Gauff have a successful doubles partnership that has seen them reach world No. 1 and secure five WTA titles together. However, both are also achieving great heights in singles, ranked at No. 3 and No. 6 respectively.
Moreover, their talent as singles players has been on full display over the last few weeks, as both women have now secured a WTA 1000 title this month.
Pegula and Gauff win in Cincinnati and Canada
Their successful few weeks began with Pegula's win at the Omnium Banque Nationale Canadian Open in Montreal last week. The 29-year-old defeated Liudmila Samsonova 6-1, 6-0 to win her first title of the year.
A week later, Gauff made it to the final of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, where she won against Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-4. This was the 19-year-old's third title of 2023 and fifth WTA title overall.
This means that Pegula and Gauff have won a combined four titles in singles on the WTA Tour so far this season, and are also the first American women to have triumphed at both Canada and Cincinnati in the same year during the Open Era.
Pegula reacts to success
To mark the occasion, WTA Insider posted a tweet explaining the milestone:
"With Coco Gauff winning #CincyTennis and Jessica Pegula winning #OBN23, this is the first time since Cincinnati returned to the calendar in 2004 that Americans have swept Cincy and Canada."
In response, Pegule retweeted it with the caption:
"Consider it swept," followed by an American flag and an applause emoji.
