Jessica Pegula faced a tricky challenge in the first round of Roland Garros as she played compatriot Danielle Collins but she did well beating her 6-4 6-2.
This matchup didn't go the way some anticipated it to go because Pegula proved a lot better than Collins. Collins is a really solid player who is capable of playing at a high level. She's a former grand slam finalist but clay isn't her best surface even if she had decent results on it in the past. Pegula has been one of the best players in the world for over a year and she played this match that way.
The first set was an interesting one as Pegula took an early 2-0 lead but Collins pulled it back to 2-2. Then we saw Pegula take another break and then lose her serve. And then she took another break and this time around it was enough to finish things off 6-4. She was much more stable from the baseline posting 9 winners which is the same amount Collins had. The latter however had four errors more and didn't serve as well as Pegula.
The second set was even more impressive from Pegula as she completely broke down the play of her opponent. The first few games saw the players trade breaks once more but after that, Pegula stabilized and took a 5-1 lead. She would finish off the match 6-2 and it's mostly because Collins tried to force it.
She played more aggressively but it didn't work as she had 12 unforced errors to Pegula's 3. The winners and errors show that Pegula had a lot more control in her tennis and that proved key. She had 19 winners and only 12 errors while Collins had 17 and 25.
