Day three of the 2023 WTA Finals will take place on Tuesday, October 31 at the Plaza Quintana Roo in Cancun, Mexico. Here is our preview of the day, with Aryna Sabalenka, Jessica Pegula, Elena Rybakina, and Maria Sakkari set to take to the courts in the group stage.
First up on day three of the WTA Finals, World No. 1 Sabalenka will take on World No. 5 Pegula. Both emerged victorious in their first-round clashes, with Sabalenka defeating Sakkari 6-0, 6-1, while Pegula moved past Rybakina 7-5, 6-2.
Both have had very successful seasons, with Sabalenka winning the Australian Open and reaching the final of the US Open, while Pegula won the WTA 1000 Canadian Open in August and reached the final of the Pan Pacific Open last month.
The pair have faced each other five times before, with Sabalenka leading their head-to-head 4-1. Pegula won their first clash at the 2020 Cincinnati Open, with Sabalenka having won every clash since then.
Meanwhile, Rybakina will battle it out with Sakkari, both of whom lost their previous clashes. The Kazakhstani player lost to Pegula, while Sakkari, who entered the tournament as a replacement for Karolina Muchova, lost to Sabalenka.
Throughout the season, Rybakina reached the final of the Australian Open and won the WTA 1000 Indian Wells Open and Italian Open, while Sakkari won her first ever WTA 1000 title at the Gualajara Open in September.
Their head-to-head is currently level at 1-1.
