The 2026 BNP Paribas Open in
Indian Wells reaches its conclusion with a high-profile championship match between world No.1
Aryna Sabalenka and world No.3
Elena Rybakina. It will be a repeat of the 2023 final, when the Kazakh lifted her first WTA 1000 title.
Sabalenka booked her place in the final after defeating Linda Noskova 6-3, 6-4 in the semi-final, producing another composed performance during what has been a dominant start to the 2026 season. Rybakina, meanwhile, advanced by overcoming Elina Svitolina 7-5, 6-4, continuing a remarkable run against the tour’s elite opponents.
Earlier this year, Rybakina defeated Sabalenka in the
Australian Open final, extending a recent stretch of victories in the rivalry. Their meeting in
Indian Wells now adds another chapter to a matchup that has repeatedly shaped the biggest stages of the WTA Tour.
There have now been 15 previous meetings — one of the rivalries with the most encounters among active players on the WTA Tour — with the Belarusian leading 8-7, although Rybakina has emerged victorious in four of the five finals in which they have faced each other.
Rybakina riding elite-level momentum in the California desert
Rybakina arrives in the Indian Wells final in outstanding form, continuing a streak that has established her as one of the most consistent players against top opposition. The Kazakh has now won 12 consecutive matches against Top-10 opponents, eight of those victories coming in straight sets.
Her broader record against the tour’s elite further highlights that ability. Rybakina holds a 36–27 career record against Top-10 players, making her one of only four active competitors with a winning mark against that level of opposition, alongside Sabalenka, Iga Swiatek and Venus Williams.
Indian Wells has also been a particularly productive venue for the former Wimbledon champion. Outside of the Grand Slams, the tournament represents the event where Rybakina has won the most matches in her career, now standing at 16 victories in the California desert. She previously lifted the title here in 2023, one of her two WTA 1000 titles alongside the Rome crown that same season.
This week’s run also marks her sixth career WTA 1000 final, reinforcing her growing consistency at the highest level of regular-season tournaments on the tour.
This week she defeated rivals such as Marta Kostyuk, Jessica Pegula and Svitolina herself. She has conceded only one set on her path to the final, which came in her debut match against Hailey Baptiste in the second round.

Sabalenka chasing long-awaited Indian Wells title
Sabalenka has once again delivered a strong campaign in Indian Wells, reaching her third final at the tournament after a composed victory over Noskova in the semi-final. The Belarusian broke twice in the opening set before closing out a 6-3, 6-4 win in one hour and 28 minutes.
The world No.1 has been one of the most dominant players on tour this season, compiling a 16-1 record in 2026. Her only defeat of the year came in the Australian Open final against Rybakina, adding extra motivation ahead of this rematch. Sabalenka has reached her 14th WTA 1000 final (9-4 record), having previously fallen in the Indian Wells finals in 2023 and 2025.
Her run this week has been largely comfortable, with the Belarusian winning all five of her matches in straight sets while displaying the aggressive baseline game that has defined her dominance in recent seasons. She has secured 14 breaks of serve and conceded her own serve only twice. Opponents such as Naomi Osaka and Victoria Mboko found no solutions to Sabalenka’s confidence as she aims to finally claim the title in Indian Wells.
Her two previous appearances in the final both ended in defeat. The first came in 2023 against Rybakina, when the Kazakh lifted the title in straight sets. She had another opportunity in Tennis Paradise in 2025, but ended up wasting a set advantage before falling to Mirra Andreeva.
