Day Four of the
WTA Finals in Riyadh brings the second day of competition for the players in the Steffi Graf Group. Sunday's winners—Aryna Sabalenka and
Jessica Pegula—will headline the day, vying to secure their spots in the tournament semifinals.
On the other side, a duel between players in desperate need of a win will take place between defending champion
Coco Gauff and Italy's World No. 8 Jasmine Paolini. Both were defeated on the group's opening day and need a victory if they want to avoid an early exit.
Gauff and Paolini face must-win scenario
Defending champion Coco Gauff suffered a tough loss on the first day against Jessica Pegula. The two-time Grand Slam champion appeared to flirt with a comeback in the second set but was ultimately overwhelmed by her former doubles partner. Gauff once again displayed the service problems that have constantly plagued her in recent seasons, committing a total of 17 double faults.
The American had a notable run in Riyadh in 2024, winning the title after defeating Zheng Qinwen in the final. This time, she arrived with even greater confidence than last year, having won the WTA 1000 Wuhan Open title three weeks ago without dropping a set, defeating Paolini in the semifinals and Pegula in the final. She entered Riyadh with 9 wins in her last 10 appearances, but the performance against Pegula raised more questions than answers. It remains to be seen if she can bounce back against Paolini.
The Italian secured her qualification for the WTA Finals for the second consecutive year in recent weeks, after reaching back-to-back semifinals in Wuhan and Ningbo. The two-time major runner-up was eliminated in the Round Robin phase last year, and if she doesn't beat Gauff, history could repeat itself. In her defeat to Sabalenka, she only managed to win 4 games (3-6, 1-6), which could negatively affect a potential classification, even if she manages to defeat Gauff.
The current head-to-head record is 3-3, including four meetings this year (3-1 in favor of Paolini). One of the highlights was their match in the Rome Open final this May, where Paolini rallied from a set down to secure a three-set victory in front of her home crowd, claiming her second WTA 1000 title—a result that was key to keeping her in the Top-10 throughout the season.

Sabalenka vs. Pegula: A rematch for group leadership
The second match of the day will feature the two winners from the opening day, who will battle for the leadership of the Steffi Graf Group. World No. 1
Aryna Sabalenka will once again face World No. 5 Jessica Pegula, a familiar opponent with 11 prior encounters.
Sabalenka started her participation in Riyadh on the right foot, achieving her 60th victory of the season. She also arrived at the tournament with the assurance that she would finish the year as World No. 1 regardless of the outcome, which may mean less pressure as she chases a title she has yet to lift (reaching the final in 2022 and the semifinals in '23 and '24).
Across the net will be the American Jessica Pegula, who surprised her compatriot Gauff in the opener. Pegula is coming off strong results in the latter part of the season: she reached the semifinals at the US Open and China Open, in addition to the Wuhan final. She has 51 wins in 70 matches this season and, like Sabalenka, her best result at the Finals was reaching the final in 2023—where she lost to Iga Swiatek.
The overall head-to-head is 8-3 in favor of Sabalenka, including the memorable 2024 US Open final and the Miami Open final in early 2025. However, Pegula was the winner in their most recent encounter just a couple of weeks ago in Wuhan, where she managed to snap Sabalenka's dominant streak at that tournament—where she was the three-time defending champion—eliminating her in the semifinals 2-6, 6-4, 7-6(2). Not many players have a high chance against Sabalenka, but the experienced Pegula emerges as one of the names that can complicate things for the current ranking leader.
