PREVIEW | WTA Madrid Open 2025 - Saturday, April 26: Mirra Andreeva and Iga Swiatek seek to advance in the Caja Mágica
WTA
The WTA Madrid Open 2025 enters its fifth day of action with many high-caliber matches at the Caja Mágica. Mirra Andreeva, Iga Swiatek, Coco Gauff and other top stars look to advance in the Spanish capital.
With all the major stars having already seen action at the second Masters 1000 clay-court event of the season, it's time to see how the likes of Coco Gauff, Iga Swiatek, Madison Keys and Mirra Andreeva, who will be playing for their chance to advance in the Spanish capital, have recovered from their debuts.
Here is a review of the most important matches of the fifth day of competition:
Mirra Andreeva - Magdalena Frech: Teenager aims to regain form
The 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva returns to the stage where she had her big breakthrough two years ago. A week away from coming of age, the Russian has established herself as one of the best in the world, breaking into the top 10 and aiming for the top 5.
The young tennis player has acknowledged that the media noise surrounding her figure was distracting at times, but she has a great team to help her manage the pressure.
After defeating Marie Bouzkova in her debut, Andreeva will face Poland's Magdalena Frech, against whom she has faced only once. This year, in the round of 32 of the Australian Open, Mirra defeated the European in three sets, and since then things have changed and Andreeva has moved up a level, so she is the favorite to win the match.

Madison Keys - Anna Kalinskaya: Australian champion wants to stand out on clay
Madison Keys, current world No. 5 and newly crowned Australian Open 2025 champion, will try to keep improving on a surface that is not the best suited to her tennis. Beyond that, Keys had a solid debut in the Caja Mágica against Bronzetti, winning in straight sets;
To reach the round of 16, she will have to overcome the obstacle called Anna Kalinskaya. The Russian, partner of world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, has fallen several positions this year after failing to sustain what she achieved in 2024. However, she defeated France's Diane Parry in the first round and was the ultimate head-to-head winner over Keys as she comfortably defeated her in front of her home crowd in the round of 16 in Charleston.

Ann Li - Coco Gauff: A duel between compatriots with a different present
Coco Gauff, seeded No. 4 and one of the brightest stars on the circuit at 21, is coming off a spectacular comeback in the second round against Dayana Yastremska, whom she defeated 0-6, 6-2, 7-5 after not winning a single game in the first set.
The American, winner of 1 Grand Slam title, has been irregular in the season, alternating good victories and unexpected defeats. In Madrid she has the chance to reach the round of 16 and gain confidence with Roland Garros in her sights.
Her next challenge will be Ann Li, who surprised Leylah Fernandez in the first round, defeating her in three sets.
The record between the two has Gauff up 1-0, winning in Berlin 2022 in the round of 32.

Iga Swiatek - Linda Noskova: The number 2 takes to the court after the scare
By now it is no news that the 2025 season for the former world number 1, Iga Swiatek, is not being the best. It seems that at the same time that some Tour players have stepped up the pace and made the leap in quality, the four-time Roland Garros champion took a step backwards.
In the first round she defeated the Filipina Alexandra Eala in a heart-stopping match, coming back from a set and a break down. In any case, she is still the queen of clay and it is impossible to rule her out of a tournament like the Madrid Open;
She will face the Czech Linda Noskova, an always complicated match but in which she holds a 5-1 head to head supremacy. In the current campaign they played their last match, with Swiatek winning in Doha in three hard-fought sets in the round of 16.

- One step by another step -- WTA continues to 'lose the plot'. Too many hi-tech microphones being installed at most venues!!! Remove them (especially those along the hallways, sidewalks, and pathways throughout the venues. Not to mention (most of all) remove the mic's from the Players/Coaches Box.

- Don't you just love this young lady!? We fans often expect athletes to be supermen and superwomen, often forgetting that they WILL GET TIRED! I love Alex's perspective. Tiredness for an athlete should never be viewed as a negative, especially if you are healthy, taking care of your body and mental health and putting in the work. What a mature perspective. Good for you, Alex!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Jess is absolutely correct! But the disrespect is a trait I have noticed in most of the Russian players. Mirra is good but very immature and lacks humility. Conceivable needs to get a handle on that!Rapunzel05-11-2026
- Having spent weeks and weeks through the years on tour, I can say with confidence that Conchita was (is) one of the very few who realize the surprising level of maturity (and sometimes lack of) which Mirra seems to have developed in such a demanding adult world of Pro-Tennis. While at the same time reminding herself (Conchita, that is) that Mirra is still young and developing mentally and physically. The general public may forget at times, or not at all realize, these modern era young athletes do not have a 'normal' Youth. It's a major sacrifice, among countless sacrifices, these athletes must make. People who blow-off that fact are ignorant and unfair when they blurt out, "They choose fame so they have to put up with the intrusions on their lives". No, they do not.mandoist05-11-2026
- Okay... someone with a camera was EAVESDROPPING on a private conversation. Shouldn't that be the point of discussion here? Regardless of the sensationalist crap by media, Pegula (and anyone) has a right to an opinion. There used to be an expectation that private conversations were respected, regardless of 'stardom' and whatever other defensive excuses media tries to shove in our faces. Boo-hoo if feelings are hurt. BTW: Having been employed at various tourney venues, etc., I can't tell you how nasty and offensive players can be when discussing their opponents and colleagues... in "private". Well, I could, but won't. I also challenge anyone to deny what Jessica said is false.mandoist05-11-2026
