As the 2024
Indian Wells Open began, there was a strange and rare occurrence as two sisters appeared on court and adjacent ones at that at the same time in California. Those being
Mirra Andreeva and
Erika Andreeva.
16-year-old Mirra Andreeva was dumped out and left in tears as she was defeated by Katie Volynets on Wednesday night. After having a near sterling opening year on the tour where she was the WTA Newcomer of the Year, the Russian showed her first signs of frailty against the American who was likely buoyed given that she is from California.
Erika Andreeva on the other hand is the senior sister given that she is 19-years-old so three years older. She is technically not out, but there is an asterisk behind that one as she is one game away from being defeated by Danielle Collins on Court Three. This match was one of many to fall fowl to the weather with play being suspended due to rain and then ended for the night.
As well as Andreeva v Collins, Venus Williams and Caroline Wozniacki were among the leading lights who have to return on Thursday to complete their matches with varying degrees of closeness to conclusion. Venus for instance is only at 1-1 against Nao Hibino, while Wozniacki is a set up and like Collins is closer to the conclusion. But with both in action at the same time, the Andreeva sisters are certainly making their mark at least at Indian Wells whether they both lose in the first round or not.
