After days of criticism and pressure, Roland Garros (French Open) scheduled a women's match in the premier night shift slot with Sabalenka and Stephens.
There have been reporters for a few days now how the French Open organizers haven't scheduled a single women's match in the night shift match. Last year's event saw only one match played in that timeslot and this year we had to wait several days. There were louder and louder calls for women to get one match and now they have it.
We will be seeing Aryna Sabalenka taking on Sloane Stephens as both of these players are grand slam champions. Stephens is a former finalist in Paris while Sabalenka is hoping to get there this year. Much like last year this year's scheduling was again defended by tournament director Amelie Mauresmo who created a lot of controversy last year by hinting at men's matches simply being a better product.
She didn't say that this year but echoed similar sentiments once again. We'll see if this match remains the only one scheduled this year as last year's event. Journalist Ben Rothenberg even referred to last year's match as a token one. Let's see if that one is also a 'token' one.
