Coco Gauff celebrates her second Grand Slam title after overcoming world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in the Roland Garros final in a remarkable comeback, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3. The world No. 2 is crowned French Open champion – succeeding Iga Swiatek – and taking revenge for the Madrid Open final a month ago.
It was the second time Sabalenka and Gauff met in a Grand Slam final – following the American's triumph at the 2023 US Open. Just like that night in Flushing Meadows, Gauff came from a set down to take control of the match and close out one of the best wins of her career.

First Set

Both started with strong service games, but Sabalenka was the first to take the lead with a break to love in the third game. The Belarusian capitalized on Gauff's unforced errors, as the American hit several balls into the net from the baseline. Sabalenka seized the momentum; between the second and fifth game, she had several minutes of dominance, winning 15/17 points before Gauff managed to re-enter the match.
The world No. 1 secured her second consecutive break and comfortably went up 4-1, but then Gauff responded, recovering a break on her first opportunity of the match. This time, Gauff had a run of points – 10 consecutive – and managed to recover both breaks, converting 2/6 opportunities to bring the score back to 4-4.
However, Gauff conceded her service game again, giving Sabalenka the chance to serve for the set. This time, the Belarusian had two set points but couldn't convert them, and after a hard-fought game, Gauff took her 5th break point of the game and managed to rekindle hope, leveling the score at 5-5.

Gauff recovered two breaks below and saved two set points, but was not enough to win the set.
Again, there were cross-breaks, leading everything to a tie-break. Gauff took an early advantage with two mini-breaks, leading 4-1, but she couldn't maintain the lead, and Sabalenka ultimately asserted her dominance to take a rollercoaster of a set 7-6(5). The Belarusian had up to 32 unforced errors, compared to Gauff's 16, but she was better in moments under pressure, taking a tight set where she didn't manage to deploy her best level.

Second Set

Gauff managed to reset things in the second set and got an early break that put her up 1-0. The advantage grew even larger when she secured her second break in the 5th game, putting her up 4-1 with her serve. Sabalenka fought to recover one of her breaks, but again struggled with her serve, committing double faults that led the American to secure a second consecutive break – again to love.
With the score at 5-2, this time the world No. 2 didn't falter under pressure and eventually closed out the set 6-2, in a set with far fewer errors from both sides (only 10 between both players, compared to 48 in the previous set). Sabalenka particularly struggled with her first serve, winning only 29% of those points.

Sabalenka just won 35% of the points played in the set.

Third Set

Gauff showed herself to be better from the baseline, containing Sabalenka's attacks well, which forced the Belarusian to risk more with her shots and commit more unforced errors. Coco took the lead in the third game with a break and then threatened with a couple more break points when she was up 3-1.
Again, Sabalenka showed resilience to recover the break and level everything at 3-3. Sabalenka had improved her first serve, maintaining around 80% first serve in, though winning less than 60% of them, and Gauff quickly recovered the break. This time, the American managed to get ahead with her serve – maintaining remarkable effectiveness of over 85% of points won with her first serve – and went up 5-3. Sabalenka had the obligation to stay in the match with her serve and responded, but it wasn't enough for a comeback. Gauff closed out the victory with her serve - saving a break point - by 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-4 to lift the Suzanne Lenglen trophy.
The victory gives Gauff her second Grand Slam title and tips the scales against the Belarusian to 6-5 in the head-to-head. The American will remain at world No. 2 – still a good distance of 3,000 points behind Sabalenka.
