Mirra Andreeva has done it again with the 16-year-old breaking new ground with a run to the Last 16 at 2023
Wimbledon after defeating Anastasia Potapova 6-2, 7-5.
Andreeva reached the third round as a qualifier and in only four tour events, she has reached the last 16 in two of them and will now face Madison Keys for a spot in the Quarter-Finals.
This will be played on Monday with Andreeva initially set to play on Saturday but rain delays meant the outside courts were cancelled.
But no one could rain on the parade of the prodigy who breezed through the opener 6-2 finding all the angles and frustrating Potapova who's only resolve came towards the end of the set when she held her serve initially being 5-0 down.
The second set was a lot less comfortable for Andreeva who went 4-1 down and looked likely to be taken to a decider but she showed great resolve to become the youngest player to reach the fourth round since Coco Gauff in 2019.
Laid back, effortless and showing a poise well beyond her years, Andreeva continues to be a star.
Especially on a surface which she never played on before coming through qualifying. A likely bigger court awaits tomorrow against the American Keys.
Keys has been on a roll over the past few weeks since winning Eastbourne and like Alexander Bublik in the Men's did not suffer the curse of winning the title.
It could be a step too far for Andreeva at this point, but nevertheless, it is still another landmark for the 16-year-old. Especially over an opponent in Potapova who is at her peak and defeated Andreeva in Monastir last year.
