Iga Swiatek pulled off another superb season in 2023, breaking and becoming part of multiple records on the WTA Tour.

The World No. 1 rose to dominance in 2022 after the shock retirement of Ashleigh Barty. The Polish player then went on to win two Grand Slam titles - the French Open and the US Open - and posted a record 67-9 win-loss record, the most since Serena Williams in 2013.

Despite some trickier patches along the way, Swiatek has still shone throughout the 2023 season and could easily be described as the player of the year once again. The 22-year-old defended her title at Roland Garros and finished the season off in style by winning the WTA Finals and re-gaining World No. 1 from Aryna Sabalenka in the process. This consolidated her place as year-end No. 1 for a second consecutive year.

Five records Swiatek became a part of in 2023

With victories at the WTA 250 Warsaw Open, 500 Qatar Open, and 1000 China Open to name a few, combined with her Grand Slam and WTA Finals success, Swiatek ensured that she won titles across all levels of the WTA Tour. This makes her the third player to do so, and the first in ten years after Williams and Petra Kvitova pulled off the feat in 2013 and 2011 respectively.

Moreover, Swiatek achieved several records at the WTA Finals in Cancun. She was the fourth player to win the title before the age of 23, after Kim Clijsters, Maria Sharapova, and Kvitova. Furthermore, she smashed the record for the fewest games dropped on the way to the trophy, losing just 20 across all her matches.

On top of this, Swiatek achieved the record for the fewest games dropped in the final at the season-ending championship, dominating her match against Jessica Pegula to win 6-1, 6-0. Finally, she is also the sixth-youngest woman to finish the year as World No. 1 in back-to-back seasons. In doing so, Swiatek joins Chris Evert, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, and Caroline Wozniacki.

Fans have taken to social media to react to this feat, praising Swiatek's extraordinary ability: "an absolute tennis sensation! Breaking records left and right, she's etching her name in history. A toast to her unmatched skill, determination, and a year filled with triumphs. Cheers to Iga, a true tennis marvel!" wrote one.
