Caroline Wozniacki has come under fire from tennis fans who have called the former World No.1 entitled and arrogant after her father conducted an interview with website, Sport.PL slamming the WTA as well as the wildcard process for returning mothers.
Wozniacki was noted as deciding against entering qualifying for the French Open. This is despite the fact that the former World No.1 could've got in fairly easily and he said this was to see if she would be respected and given one. As a result of not being handed one, he said that she won't return next year to the tournament.
He called the WTA ridiculous and amateur in both their handling of players like Wozniacki as well as scheduling. This has landed Wozniacki in unintentional likely on her end hot water as she navigates a cauldron of the wildcard abyss anyway with criticism being levied at times during her return for relying on this route.
As well as not playing for most of last season on her return which kind of ruined hopes of getting out of the wildcard situation and also qualifying for the Olympic Games. Tennis fans though did not take too kindly to this interview with Wozniacki and her father widely slammed.
"Sure we could but Caroline said that she didn't work hard all her life and didn't achieve that much to start like a junior now. At some point in life, however, there should be respect in a sport in which a person meant something," said Wozniacki to Sport.PL.
Wozniacki has played entirely off wildcards since her return to the sport last year.
“Caroline told me that it's hard - if she doesn't get a wild card to RG she won't play in it. She would rather wait for them to respond to her request than to apply for the qualifying….I'll tell you that Caroline will definitely not play next year. We have already decided”
“Caroline is not the type of person who considers qualies a dishonour [..] But in RG case, she wanted to see if she was respected..That's why she didn't enter qualies”
Fan reaction slams Wozniacki
"The entitlement is off the charts! Pretty sure she’s had a WC into almost every big event… as she said before coming out of retirement, that she believed she could win the US Open upon return. Why is she still not top 100 then after so many WC’s?" one user responded on X.
"Give me a break. She came back almost 1 year ago and received WC after WC with the exception of Rome open and RG and she still doesn't have a ranking to enter MD . But her ego is too big that she can't play qualifying???," another responded.
"Audacity! She got wildcards and didn’t perform. She came back to the game with no changes and no development. It’s a new world, the women hit just as hard as the men now. Plus she retired, she didn’t leave for a child and come back like Osaka/Svitolina.This isn’t a family issue."
"Didn't she say the current field was so much weaker than the field when she was active? Well, she should be able to play through this field quite easily, no? Who needs a wild card?"
Others have also used Simona Halep gifs and pictures in response as well 'cry me a river' on multiple occasions with the former in response to Wozniacki criticizing Halep for doing what she criticized Sharapova for not working her way back up the ranks and starting from the bottom. Quotes that in this case fairly fly in the face of that as complaints that the Dane too isn't getting the rewards for her stellar career.
