All good things must come to an end, and the career of Serena Williams is no exception as the WTA legend finally fell in the third round to Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday night at the US Open.
Despite being shaken by nerves and the crowd screaming for a Williams victory, Tomljanovic was able to overcome the 23-time Grand Slam champion in a hard-fought 7-5 6-7(4) 6-1 victory. As fans flocked in record numbers to see the American in action, the Australian was forced to tune out the noise and focus on the task at hand.
The first set saw both women exchange breaks before Williams establish a 5-3 lead. However, her Aussie opponent fought back as the American was unable to seal the deal. Tomljanovic would go on to win four straight games, taking the first set as the crowd was stunned into silence.
Nonetheless, Williams displayed her championship pedigree, reverting to her younger self as she fought to keep the second set level. After numerous mind-blowing rallies, a tiebreak ensued. It was here that the American's clutch gene kicked in, as she obtained a minibreak to clinch the second set.
With the fans willing her on, the 40-year old broke Tomljanovic to begin the final set. However, the World No.46 rallied back, remaining steady as the errors began to creep into Williams' game. The Aussie would win five consecutive games to lead 5-1 and serve for the match.
Perhaps sensing this was truly her last moment on the court, Williams refused to give in. The 15-minute final game saw the former World No.1 save five match points and obtain two break chances, but eventually an errant forehand gave Tomljanovic the win after three hours and 4 minutes.
An emotional Williams gave a short speech following her loss, thanking her sister Venus, her family and the millions of fans who have supported her throughout her legendary career.
